The local administration last night imposed section 144 to prevent from taking place a planned rally in commemoration of those killed in Naniachar massacre 16 years ago.

The Hill Students’ Council, Hill Women’s Federation and Democratic Youth Forum decided to hold the rally at Upazila ground, but the UNO ordered the police to dismantle the stage being prepared there.

“No public meetings, rallies and processions are permitted within 200 yards of the Upazila” the announcement said.

Later, the organisers reached an agreement with the UNO and shifted the venue to Amgashtola area.

Nanicahar massacre took place on 17 November 1993. About 36 Jumma people were killed when the Bengali settlers and the Bangladesh army personnel attacked them in Naniachari bazaar.
