UPDF supporter beaten in Rangamati

A supporter of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) was beaten up by Jana Samhati Samiti (Santu group) members in Rangamati town on Monday, 17 August.
Mr. Bidit Dewan (36 years), a businessman, was on his way to meet his business partner at around 5pm when the incident took place.
A gang of JSS (Santu) members led by Pohel Chakma halted him at T&T area and roughed him up. They kicked and punched him, and hit him with sticks.
He was admitted to Rangamati Sadar Hospital with serious injuries.
Mr. Dewan is a supporter of the UPDF and lives in Kalindipur of Rangamati town. He ran for the post of Upazila Chairman of Barkal in the last Upazila elections held in January.
One of his neighbours said “this is the second time he has been beaten up by the Santu’s gang members.”
Mr. Dewan was first beaten up before the last parliamentary elections in December last year, he added.
