Three front organisations of the United Peoples Democratic Front (UPDF) have staged demonstration in Khagrachari demanding arrest and punishment of Laxmichari zone commander Lt. Col. Shariful Islam for masterminding the killing of UPDF leader Rui Khoi Marma on 2 October. (photo attached)
The demonstration was organised by Democratic Youth Forum, Hill Students’ Council and Hill Women’s Federation.
They took out a procession from Swanirbhor bazaar at 4:45pm which marched to Shapla Chattwar in downtown Khagrachari.
Later, they held a rally at Chengi Square which was addressed by DYF leader Subir Chakma, HWF Khagrachari District unit president Riku Chakma and PCP activist Subrata Tripura.
“We urge the government to arrest and punish Laxmichari zone commander Lt. Col. Sharif for orchestrating the murder of UPDF leader Rui Khoi Marma.” Subir Chakma demanded.
Recalling the 9 October unprovoked attack on the activists of the three organisations in Laxmichari, Riku Chakma said “it was a planned attack; Lt. Sharif himself instigated the settlers to launch it. During the attack, we could not distinguish between the settlers and the police because the police were also in civilian uniforms. Even it might be possible that some army personnel had come and taken part in the attack wearing civilian dresses”
Subrata Tripura demanded a complete withdrawal of the army. “The army is the greatest threat to peace and security in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.” he said.
