A member of the United Peoples’ Democratic Front (UPDF) has been shot dead by armed militants of the Santu faction of the Jana Samhati Samiti.
The incident occurred about 12:30pm today when six UPDF members went to Sakrachari village, 2 kilometers south-east of Barkal Upazila headquarters in Rangamati district, to attend a meeting.
The JSS men fired on them indiscriminately, killing Rafel Chakma on the spot. He hails from Aimachara Union, Barkal. However, other UPDF members could escape unhurt.
JSS (Santu) has intensified its armed offensive against UPDF in the last few months, killing at least three.
It has also kidnapped 5 members and supporters of the UPDF, tortured scores of villagers and attacked UPDF offices in Ghagra and Subholong.
