News No. 36/2009, May 12, 2009
The central office of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) in a statement today, 12 may, condemned the killing of two Jumma youths in army firing on the night of 10 May at Badalchari in Rangamati district.
UPDF also demanded unconditional release of two others arrested during the same incident.
Terming the newspaper reports of the incident, published in a section of the national media quoting military sources, as untrue and distorted, the statement said the ill fated Jummas were killed in a premeditated manner in “exchange of fire with the army” to malign the image of the UPDF.
The statement further said not very long ago some over-ambitious army officers, out to get a quick promotion, arrested many UPDF members as well as innocent people, put weapons in their hands and sent them to jail after branding them as terrorists. These arrested Jummas are still languishing in the dark cells of the jails.
The statement termed as regrettable such incidents as this one that is happening during the present rule of Awami League, which came to power through an election, and said UPDF is a democratic organisation which has clearly stated in its constitution that it would carry out the struggle for people’s rights through peaceful and democratic means.
