Bengali settlers gain profits by receiving Tk. 10,000 compensation of army chief

During the visit of the spot of arson incident of Sajek under Baghaichari upazila in Rangamati, Army Chief Gen Moeen U Ahmed declared to provide a financial grant of Tk. 10,000 for each affected family as compensation. It is learnt that the grants were already reached there and are being distributed to the affected families.

However, one Jumma villager requesting not be named alleges, "Cow and goat were given same price. The houses of Bengali settlers were merely a shack. There was nothing except four temporary hedge-rows. On the contrary, the houses of the Jumma villagers were almost permanent abode. There were valuables including furniture, utensils, cloths, rice, even some had TV and CIT sheets." He says, Bengali settlers gained more profits by receiving lump sum Tk. 10,000 alone.

One woman from Rangaram Mukh village whose house was completely burnt to ashes says, Bengali settlers even earned profits by looting the houses of the Jumma villagers before setting fire on them. She claims, she witnessed looting of valuables of her neighbouring house by the Bengali settlers. However, same relief were distributed to them (Bengalis), even some cases they are receiving relief more than one time.

In this arson attack on 7 indigenous villages committed by Bengali settlers in presence of military forces on 20 April, total 76 houses of indigenous people and 43 houses of Bengali settlers were burnt to ashes.
